As we were watching the great/awful Saturday night T.V. last night, my daughter said to me ‘mummy, if I was in the final of the X Factor would you vote for me?’
‘Well’ I said ‘that would depend on who you were up against’
‘What if I was up against your favourite?’
‘Well I suppose I’d judge it on the actual performance’
We giggled a bit. She knows me well enough to know I wasn’t going to say ‘of course I’d vote for you darling!’
I said: ‘What if I was on the final of the X Factor?’
‘DON’T. YOU. EVER. GO. ON. THE. X. FACTOR. I. WOULD. LITERALLY. DIE.’
My honesty is nothing compared to hers.
The X Factor provides fascinating social study, and that’s why I watch it of course. When I see some of the poor teens with very little talent publicly and cruelly humiliated in auditions, I always wonder where was the parent giving them some honest feedback? Somebody needed to show them some honesty. Somebody at some point needed to say: ‘I don’t think you’re good enough darling.’
Or even: ‘DON’T. YOU. EVER. GO. ON. THE. X. FACTOR. I. WOULD. LITERALLY. DIE.’
